Council of the Three Fires

The Council of Three Fires is a historic alliance of the Odawa (Ottawa), Ojibwe (Chippewa), and Potawatomi nations, rooted in a shared ancestry, culture, and purpose. This powerful confederation has existed for centuries, fostering unity, collaboration, and mutual support among these tribes.

Traditionally referred to as the “Nishnabe” Confederacy, the Council of Three Fires played a central role in shaping the history of the Great Lakes region. Each member nation brought its unique strengths: the Odawa as the traders, the Ojibwe as the protectors, and the Potawatomi as the keepers of the fire. Together, they worked to maintain peace, navigate alliances, and preserve their cultural heritage.

Today, the spirit of the Council continues to inspire and guide us. It serves as a reminder of our collective resilience, the importance of community, and the enduring power of our traditions.

This page celebrates the legacy of the Council of Three Fires, honoring the wisdom of our ancestors and their vision of unity and strength. Through collaboration and shared purpose, we continue their mission to protect and uplift our people, culture, and land.

Let us remember that the fire of our ancestors still burns brightly, lighting our path forward together.

The Mackinac Bands of Chippewa and Ottawa is actively working to with other bands in the area to reignite the council of the three fires to the benefit of us all.
